When I spoke with Mat before we made “Wake Up The Sleepers”, I told him to “make me cry and write lyrics that are personal, honest, and from the heart.” I think “Promise Me” was his way of showing just that, along with getting us all back in touch with the earlier years of the band.
It’s funny, I didn’t intially want “Promise Me” on the album after hearing this demo, despite the fact I thought it was the most intimate and personal song Mat has written in years; I was actually trying to make the record 10 or 11 songs, and I just didn’t think it fit. However, Mat was a real believer in the song, and I figured if he had that much passion for it, our fans would too.
Looking back, I’m so glad it made the cut, because it gave “Wake Up The Sleepers” greater depth and diversity. I’m very happy that the video shared that same spirit too.

lyrics
I REALIZE NOW I CAN'T GET YOU BACK : I PUSHED YOU TOO FAR AWAY : YOU'RE TOO STRONG TO BE LED ON : AND NOW I KNOW THE FACE THAT WILL HAUNT ME FOREVER : OH WHAT HAVE I DONE? OH WHAT HAVE I DONE? JUST PLEASE, PLEASE, PROMISE ME THAT SOMEWHERE, DARK AND DEEP IN YOUR HEART YOU'LL KEEP A TINY PLACE FOR ME WHERE A NEW GUY CAN'T REACH : JUST PROMISE ME SOMEWHERE, DARK AND DEEP IN YOUR HEART YOU'LL KEEP A PRIVATE PLACE FOR ME WHERE THE NEW GUY CAN'T REACH
